આ વાવ રાણી ઉદયમતીએ 1063માં તેમના પતિ સોલંકી વંશના રાજા ભીમદેવ પહેલાની યાદમાં બંધાવી હતી. પાછળતી આ વાવમાં સરસ્વતી નદીના પૂરના પાણી ઘૂસી ગયા હતા વાવ પર કાંપ ફરી વળ્યો હતો. છેક 1980માં ભારતીય પુરાતત્વ મોજણી વિભાગે ઉત્ખનન કર્યું ત્યારે તેનું કોતરણીકામ મૂળ સ્વરૂપમાં મળી આવ્યું હતું. રાણકી વાવ ભારતની સૌથી સુંદર વાવો પૈકીની એક છે. અને પ્રાચીન પાટનગરની સૌથી વિખ્યાત ઐતિહાસિક વિરાસતો પૈકીની એક છે.

જમીનની સપાટીથી શરૂ થતા પગથિયા શીતળ હવામાં થઇને, કેટલાક સ્તંભોવાળા ઝરૂખાઓમાં થઇને તમને ઊંડા કૂવા સુધી લઈ જાય છે. અહીં સાત ઝરુખાઓમાં આઠસોથી પણ વધુ સુશોભિત શિલ્પો છે. મુખ્ય વિષયવસ્તુ દશાવતાર છે. ભગવાના વિષ્ણુના બુદ્ધ સહિતના દશ અવતારો. આ અવતારો સાથે સાધુ, બ્રાહ્મણો અને હોઠ રંગતી તેમજ શણગાર સજતી અપ્સરાઓની મૂર્તિઓ છે. પાણીની સપાટીએ પહોંચતા શેષાશયી વિષ્ણુને કોતરેલા જુઓ છે. જેમાં વિષ્ણુ હજાર ફેણવાળા શેષનાગ પર આડા પડયા છે. એવું કહેવાય છે, અહીં તેઓ યુગો વચ્ચેના અનંતકાળમાં શાશ્વત આરામ કરે છે.
